Incoming college students focus their first year on core classes. The courses range from English and Math to Humanities and Science. One might feel that to receive credit for these courses it does not matter where you attend college. The core curriculum requirements for certain areas vary depending on the institution. For example, the University of Georgia requires 12 hours in Humanities and Fine arts. Georgia Southern University and Georgia Perimeter College only require six. To pass these courses at Georgia Southern and Georgia Perimeter, I would have to leave the course with at least a ‘C’ to get credit for it. UGA has a larger variety of courses than could be taken but some core classes taken at UGA will not transfer over to other colleges. Unlike Georgia Southern and Georgia Perimeter, UGA does not contain any REQUIRED courses in certain areas. The student can choose all of the courses. Southern’s required course is FYE 1440 which is worth 1 credit and falls under Area B, Global Engagement. Georgia Perimeter requires students to take COMM 1201 and POLS 1101 under Institutional Options and Social Sciences. Georgia Perimeter does not has nearly as many course hours as Georgia Southern does it just lacks fewer courses to choose from. I would attend Georgia Southern to take my core classes because it is still the normal load to take. UGA requires more work and hours but gives more choices. Georgia Perimeter does not require as many hours in certain areas but not as many course choices to select from. The institution attended depends on the preference of the student.
